How is Aluminum Laser Welding Performed?

Aluminum surfaces are covered with an oxidation layer that negatively affects the quality of welding. Therefore, the surfaces to be welded need to be thoroughly cleaned before the welding process. The surfaces are cleaned using chemical or mechanical methods to remove the oxidation layer completely. In addition to cleaning, aluminum surfaces must be protected from gases and other contaminants, often using a special protective gas.

In aluminum laser welding, parameters such as energy, focal distance, and laser beam width are adjusted according to the properties of the material and specific welding requirements.

The laser beam is precisely directed at the surface where the aluminum parts will be joined. The laser beam is intense enough to melt the metal. A molten pool is created to join the two metal pieces. As the laser beam continues to move, the molten pool moves as well, continuously welding the two parts together. After welding, the molten pool solidifies, forming a strong bond between the two metal pieces, completing the process.

After the welding process, quality checks are performed on the weld joint. These checks are carried out through visual inspections, radiographic tests, or ultrasonic tests.
